2.2" CrawleR Tire Testing
The 2.2” crawler tire class is defined by the diameter of the wheel, measuring nominally 2.2” on the inside, behind the beadlock lip. The associated tires have a nominal 2.2” inside diameter of the tire bead.
The tire mounts to the wheel either with glue on a plastic wheel or is pinched between the inner ring of a beadlock wheel and the inner wheel lip and outer beadlock ring. These tires come in a wide range of sizes from as small as 4.7” to as large as 6.00”
The 2.2” market seems to be cooling off slightly, with most current RTR platforms sold as either Rock Racers, Rock Buggies, or Rock Bouncers, but virtually none are sold as dedicated rock crawlers.
With U4RC still holding a relatively small footprint in the RC competition world, 2.2” trucks and buggies tend to be used mostly for casual trail driving or bashing on just about any off-road terrain.
That said, there are still a decent number of dedicated crawlers running 2.2 tires, making this section still worth the research and documentation. As long as rock racers, buggies, bouncers, and trail trucks are bring produced, there will be a need for quality tires.
